Food banks across Ottawa worked overtime collecting donations after the Sept. 21 tornadoes that caused thousands of homes to lose power.

The Kanata Food Cupboard was fortunate, says manager Patricia Elkins. Although they lost power at one location, they were able to transport product to the other location, where they collected donations and coordinated shipments to nearby food banks such as the West Carleton Food Access Centre, which had lost power after a tornado hit Dunrobin.

Elkins says support from local companies such as Martello Technologies and Dymon Storage was “overwhelming.” Events such as Techtoberfest brought members of the Kanata North community together to raise more donations.

“We’re very fortunate to be in Kanata North. The businesses here are so generous,” says Elkins. “Because of the outpouring of support in our community, we are then able to offer our systems to these other food banks.”
